Cloncurry is a small town located in North West Queensland, Australia. The town was named after the Cloncurry River, which was named by explorer Robert O'Hara Burke in 1861. The area was originally inhabited by the Kalkadoon people, who were forced out by the arrival of European settlers in the 1860s. The town of Cloncurry was founded in 1867, following the discovery of copper ore in the area. The first mine in the region was the Great Australian Copper Mine, which was established by George Landsborough in 1867. The mine was later taken over by the Mount Elliott Mining Company, which operated a number of mines in the area. The mining industry in Cloncurry has played a significant role in the town's history. The copper mines brought a large number of settlers to the area, and by the early 1900s, Cloncurry had become a major mining town. The town's population grew from around 200 people in 1880 to over 3,000 by 1911. The mining industry also brought about significant technological advancements to the region. In 1907, Cloncurry became the first town in Queensland to have an electric street lighting system. The town was also the site of Australia's first commercial radio transmission in 1921. The town of Cloncurry has also played an important role in the aviation industry. In 1922, Qantas established its first flying school in nearby Longreach. The following year, Qantas began its first regular passenger service, which flew between Charleville and Cloncurry. World War II brought significant changes to the town. The Australian Army established a military camp in Cloncurry, which eventually became a major supply base. The town's population grew again, as soldiers and workers were brought in to support the war effort. After the war, the town experienced a period of decline, as the mining industry decreased in importance. However, in recent years, the town has seen significant growth, as the mining industry has once again become a major employer in the area. Today, Cloncurry is a thriving town with a rich history. Visitors to the town can explore many of the historic buildings and sites, including the Cloncurry Railway Station, the Cloncurry Uniting Church, and the Mary Kathleen Memorial Park. The town also hosts a number of events throughout the year, including the Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft and the Cloncurry Show. In conclusion, the history of Cloncurry is one of resilience and adaptation. The town has survived significant economic changes over the years, and has emerged as a thriving community with a unique history and culture.
